From Pete Stevens …
“I am planning to do the Black Cat Track, PNG, around May next year. It is a bespoke trek with Our Spirit Trekking Company (https://www.ourspirit.com.au/walk-the-black-cat-trail/). Aidan, the head guide, was recommended to me some time ago by Rowan Tracey (Class of 72 and PNG trekking guide veteran). I’ve been in contact Aidan recently.
I need ten trekkers, minimum. I have 2 definites and two maybes at the moment. Is anybody in the class interested? I did the trek at RMC in ’72, as some of you also did. I attempted it again in 2013 but the group was attacked in what was basically a tribal dispute. For me, it is unfinished business.
A ballpark figure for all-inclusive international airfares, accommodation, travel insurance etc is $5K. To include a porter for your big pack (recommended) an extra $600.
A good historical reference is:
The Battle for Wau: New Guinea’s Frontline 1942–43, Phillip Bradley.
The narrative for the 2013 attack is:
Attack On The Black Cat Track, Max Carmichael.
I can send a copy of the latter if anyone wants one.
Please respond direct to Pete with Expressions of Interest
